Development is good, but it needs to be appropriate to the existing neighborhood. Please sign our petition if you agree by clicking here.

Come to City Hall Monday 6:30pm to Discuss Building Towers in Residential Areas

Developers are seeking permission to build a 12 story high rise in a quiet neighborhood on Vidal Street north of Thrift.

More towers hurt property values of existing condo owners, and raise land prices making single family homes less and less affordable in our little City by the Sea. It is time City Hall starting listening to residents, and not just developers.

The Rally on Vidal

Come tell City Hall on Monday night at 6:30pm that we want to preserve our neighborhoods, and not turn White Rock into downtown Vancouver! We have enough towers in White Rock.

Come to City Hall Monday at 6:30pm

Contact Fiona MacDermid at 778-549-0216 if you would like to sign the petition to prevent the Vidal   Street towers, or help gather petition signatures today and Monday.

No More Towers on Vidal Street – Come Discuss April 29th at City Hall

Developers want to build a 12-story high-rise on Vidal. This is not right for White Rock. Residents want to limit development there to 4 stories, as in the new Royce development down the street. Attend the City Hall meeting at 6:30 Monday April 29th.

Sign the petition this weekend or Monday at Marine Drive and Vidal on the water to limit excessive height on Vidal. Fiona will be there to take signatures from concerned residents who want to preserve White Rock, not open it up to exploitation from developers. This affects all White Rock Residents.
The Rally on Vidal with Lilians SignEarlier in the week, residents Lillian Zubor and Pat Patrala met with City Staff to discuss the proposed development and other local concerns. You can view the minutes of the meeting here.

Bylaw 1980 “Lets Add 20 Towers to Downtown White Rock” Public Hearing Monday March 25th

This Monday City Council will hold a Public Hearing at 7pm on bylaw #1980 which will change the OCP to allow up to 20 new high-rise towers in downtown White Rock with many as high as 25 stories tall. Our schools, hospitals, and roads are too crowded as it is. This helps greedy developers but certainly not residents and will ruin this city. Please be there to voice your opposition to bylaw 1980 (aka OCP Amendment #12).
Did you know about this plan? Most people do not. It was posted on page 14 of the Mar 22nd Peace Arch News. Unfortunately, the Ad by the City of White Rock does nothing to describe the true impact of this bylaw on our city. Here is a copy of the Peace Arch News Ad with the section on bylaw #1980 highlighted in red (otherwise you would miss it).
Bylaw 1980 - Notice of Public Hearing - Page 14
Look at the picture to see what this bylaw wants the new White Rock to look like. After you get over the shock, please share this info with your friends and neighbours. We need to speak up against more towers.

We need sustainable development with a focus on the beach and the arts, not higher population density.

Six New 25-Story High Rises proposed in the updated White Rock OCP

The White Rock planning department held a public meeting to review proposed changes to the White Rock Official Community Plan (the OCP) on Thursday February 7th. The proposed bylaw #1980, Amendment #12 to the OCP, proposes to change city-zoning rules to allow developers to build towers in the downtown core of up to 25 stories tall.
This bylaw would pre-approve zoning for six new large towers in the downtown core that would be up to 20 to 25 stories tall, plus a number of smaller towers of 8 to 12 stories tall.
White Rock OCP 2013 001

This is great for developers, but not so great for residents. Our roads, schools and hospitals are already too crowded. Let’s improve those before we start adding thousands more into White Rock City Centre. Let White Rock City Hall know how you feel before they pass Amendment #12 to make this the new OCP. If you like this, let City Hall know that as well. I will post more details about the proposed changes soon.

It’s your City by the Sea. Let City Hall know what you think.

Casino Public Hearing Scheduled for January 14th

I have been working with the South Surrey Rate Payers association and NoCasinoSurrey to help fight the proposed South Surrey Casino. Please visit my website for the latest news at www.NoCasinoSurrey.org

Just say NO to the new Casino near White Rock

Surrey City Council has been fast-tracking the approval of a new Casino compex near 8th Ave in South Surrey across Highway #99 from White Rock. On December 10th, Surrey City Council will be meeting to approve or deny the Casino Gaming Licence. The Surrey Rate Payers Association and the NDP Candidate Susan Keeping have been organizing people to fight this proposal which will place a Casino on the Semiahmoo Peninsula. I set up a website for them at www.surreyratepayersassociation.com. Please visit the site to see how you can help change Surrey City Council’s mind and keep gambling out of our community.

Next Meeting on the Proposed Casino

Whether your pro or against, come voice your opinion at the next Community Meeting about the proposed Surrey Casino on November 14th at 7pm at the Pacific Inn at 1160 King George boulevard. It’s no secret, I am against more Casinos.

Do you want a Casino on the Semiahmoo Penisula?

Do you want a Casino on the Semiahmoo Penisula? Me either!

A convention centre and theatre complex with multiple restaurants? That sounds GREAT! But unfortunately, it comes with a cost. A major Casino. People in BC our losing their homes and families are breaking up over gambling addictions. Why does our government keep pushing for more of these? Who benefits?

Whether your pro or against, come to the South Surrey Casino Open House Today at 6pm at the Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club at 18150 8th Ave in Surrey.

Come hear what the plans are and have your say. Community Discussion Meetings will be held in South Surrey regarding:

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation has announced a South Surrey Destination Casino to be opened in 2014 or early 2015 once City of Surrey Mayor and Council approves the application.

It is not too late to stop this from happening in your backyard. It is NOT a done deal… yet!

There are two sides to the story so come hear what the developer is planning. It will mean some more jobs, but also more gambling addictions and broken homes. Come decide for yourself before someone decides for you! Thanks!

The government tells us in Ads to “Please gamble responsibly”. That sounds so nice. It sounds like all one has to do is gamble in moderation and you’ll be fine. It sounds like the government is concerned and wants to help. But what they do not tell you is that gambling is addictive. I do not mean habit forming, I mean addictive. They do not tell you how gambling changes brain chemistry just as effectively as a drug addition. You can see the effects in an MRI scan of the brain. What they do not tell you is that you do not get addicted to gambling by playing and winning, studies show that people get addicted by “almost winning” or by watching someone else nearby who wins. That’s why Casino’s like to have long rows of Slot Machines so when finally someone wins, then other gamblers in that row see it happening. The brain concludes that one need only play a little while longer, and you’ll get that big pay-off. Unfortunately, it only gets worse from there. I had close friends who started gambling occaisionally. It started slowly. Then they got into credit card debt to help pay for the next round of slots, then they lost their nice house near the beach, and then they got divorced, and it got worse from there. Does this happen to every gambler? No, of course not. But it happens all too often. It needs to stop. Let’s ask our governments to “Please govern responsibly”. Let them know how you feel about it now, and then let them know again at the Polls at election time.
